A Gap I Won’t Close
Jul 11, 2025
During the PRHC review event, I realized there's a gap between the work I enjoy and the kind of work done at the company. My reviewer, who has worked at the company for nearly twenty years, described his job as mechanical bookmaking. Working for a large publishing company seems like being part of a factory, where the book is the product of the process, not of the designer.
Do I want to close that gap just to fit in and live a more secure life? I don’t think so. First, it wouldn’t be easy. I’d have to spend a lot of time and effort because it’s so different from what I’ve done so far. Second, even if I managed to close the gap, I probably wouldn’t enjoy working that way.
Now I feel I should keep doing what I’m doing and stay open to the right opportunities, rather than trying to fit into something I’m not. That’s only what I can do. It’s not optional, actually.
